FAQ’s

What is a Pediatric Neurologist, and why is my child being referred to The Westgate Center?
Pediatric neurologists are pediatricians who have chosen to specialize in the areas of the developing brains and nervous systems of children. Pediatric neurologists are required to complete extra training in neurology after finishing their residency in pediatrics. Some pediatric neurologists have completed additional training in a specific area of neurology, such as epilepsy or neuromuscular. Your child has been referred to our clinic because your child’s doctor believes he or she may benefit from visiting a pediatric neurologist. We will work with both you and your pediatrician to determine the best treatment plan for your child.
Do I need an appointment to be seen at The Westgate Center?
Yes. We see patients Monday-Thursday 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Friday 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. by appointment. Please speak with your child’s primary care physician about a referral to The Westgate Center or call our office at 334.699.3733.
Will my visit be covered by insurance?
Our office accepts Blue Cross Blue Shield, Tricare, AllKids, Medicaid and most commercial insurance plans. If you have coverage with one of the companies with whom we are a participating provider, our Insurance Representatives will process your claim. You will be responsible for paying deductibles, co-pays and non-covered services at the time services are rendered. If you have questions regarding your insurance coverage or our office policy, please contact one of our Insurance Representatives or Patient Financial Counselors at 334.699.3733.
What should I bring with me to my first appointment?
A parent or legal guardian should accompany your child to the clinic. If this person is not available, an adult who is aware of your child’s symptoms and medical history can accompany your child. Please be sure you have your insurance card with you as well as any relevant medical records or previous testing reports that you may have.
What can I expect on our first visit to your clinic?
First, we will take a medical history of your child. Be prepared to answer very detailed questions about any symptoms that you may have noticed, when the symptoms began, and how frequently the symptoms occur. This may also include other questions about your child, such as developmental history, academic achievements, social history, and diet. Once the medical history is complete, your child will receive a complete neurological examination. If our pediatric neurologist determines that additional tests may be necessary or helpful for your child, you will be told about them during your child’s visit and they will be scheduled at a mutually agreed upon time.
What if I have a question for my pediatric neurologist? Who should I contact?
If your child is experiencing a medical emergency, call 911 immediately. If you have a non-emergency question, you may call our clinic and speak with a nurse during regular business hours. For urgent medical problems after regular business hours, we provide a nurse and/or physician on-call 24 hours, 7 days per week, that can be reached by calling 334.699.3733.
